A Message from the Program Chair

The WAML encompasses academics and practicing professionals in the Medico-Legal specialties. Since 1967, the WAML has convened international gatherings allowing the professional and academic community to meet and exchange ideas. These led me to gratefully accept the role of  Program Chair of the 24th World Congress on Medical Law and Bioethics, which has been a positive challenge so far.

The Scientific Committee of the 24th World Congress on Medical Law and Bioethics reviewed about 220 abstracts from about 40 countries. The program contains about 110 oral presentations and 60 posters from 33 countries.

Main themes covered in the Congress:

  • Liability, Risk Management and Patient Safety, tort law and health

  • Health professions law and ethics

  •  Forensic Medicine

  • Disability Studies, Law and Ethics

  • Old Age, End of Life Issues and Ethics

  • Mental Health, Law and Ethics

  • Public Health Ethics and Law, Right to Health, Health Care Systems.

  • Humanitarian Medicine

  •  Religious Medical Ethics, Research Ethics and Law

  • Organ Transplantation

  •  Genetics, Ethics and Law

Accepted abstracts will be included in a special issue of Medicine and Law to be issued on August 2018.

During August, a sub-committee for the Davies Awards will review articles submitted and select the Davies Awards winners for the year of 2018. These will be announced and awarded their prizes during the closing awards session on September 5.

We are very excited with the high academic level and the diversity of speakers for this years’ Annual Congress. The prominence of the speakers in their fields and the multicultural and multinational nature of the scientific program reflects the great importance of the World Association as a unique platform for deliberation and shared learning in the fields of Bioethics, Health Law and Forensic Medicine.

On this Occasion, I would like to acknowledge the generous support of the following for the successful planning and organization of this Congress: The Israeli Ministry of Health, The Tel Aviv University Sackler Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Nursing, The Schlesinger Institute for Medical-Halachic Research, The Tel Aviv Municipality, The Thomas Noguchi Foundation, Adv. Jonathan Davies, Mr. Adam Neumann.

Looking forward to welcoming you to our World Congress,

Oren Asman, LLD,
Scientific Committee Chair, 24th World Congress on Medical Law and Bioethics
Executive Director, Bioethics and Law Initiative, Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University
