Dr. Anat Amit-Aharon (RN, MHA, PhD) specialized in public health. Her research deals with factors affecting health and their impact on reducing health disparities. A central area of ​​interest is the health aspects of political asylum seekers who have arrived in Israel since 2007.

Berna Arda, MD, MedSpec, PhD | MEDICAL ETHICS

Dr. Arda studied medicine between 1981 and 1987 in Ankara University School of Medicine. In 1987 she had the right to enter the Department of Medical Ethics of this faculty by Medical Specialty Examination. She attained the “doctor of science” title by finishing medical specialist degree in 1990 and also PhD program in the same field in 1993. She become associate professor in Ankara University School of Medicine, Department of Medical Ethics in 1993 and was assigned to the full professor position in 1999. 
In August 2010, she was elected as a vice-president of WAML (World Association for Medical Law) and she is one of the Governors of WAML since 2006.
Apart from the ethics, occupational ethics license lectures she gives as an instructor at Ankara University School of Medicine and in other faculties of the university, among those are “Medical Ethics and History of Ethics”, “Science Ethics and History of Science” and “Bioethics and Woman”.

Jean-Jacques Askenasy MD, PhD | MENTAL HEALTH AND LAW

Chairman of the dpt. of Neurology at the Univeristary Hospital CFR II Bucharest. In 1973 neurologist at Ichilov Hospital-Tel-Aviv University. Researcher in Neuroscience at Weitzman Institute 1974-1975.In 1981 was appointed Associated Prof. of Neurology at Mount-Sinai School of Medicine NY University, where he worked together with Prof. Melvin Yahr and Prof. Eliot Weitzman on the project Sleep in Parkinsonian patients. He subsequently was nominated Director of the Sleep Medicine Center at the Sheba Medical Center. In this quality he organized the courses in sleep medicine at the Tel-Aviv University. In 1986 was nominated Professeur Agrege at  Pierre et Marie Curie University, Clinique Charcot. In 1995 was nominated Clinical Professor of Neurology at Sackler School of Medicine TAU.  Member of the International Scientific Program Committee of the World Sleep Congress 2007 in Australia. Author of 13 books, 12 chapters in books, 90 original scientific articles & cas reports in the field of Neurology and Sleep Medicine, 31 invited lectures and 195 presentations at national and international congresses. 

Oren Asman, LL.D | BIOETHICS AND LAW

Senior Academic staff at the Nursing Department, and Executive Director of the Bioethics and Law Initiative at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel.  Consultant Bioethicist and a Lawyer. Dr. Asman's doctoral thesis focused on Mental Competence in Religious courts (Jewish and Muslim) in Israel. His Research focuses on Mental Health, Law and Ethics, Religion and current Health Law, Nursing Law and Ethics utilizing both quantitative methods, mixed methods and normative analysis. Dr. Asman serves as an Executive Vice President of the WAML (2016-2018) and Program Chair of the 24th World Congress on Medical Law and Bioethics

Tom Balthazar | HEALTH LAW

Tom Balthazar is associate professor of health law at the University of Gent (Belgium) and legal advisor to Zorgnet-Icuro, the umbrella organization of all hospitals and health-care institutions in Flanders.

 

Tom studied law at the universities of Gent (UGent) and Brussels (ULB). He worked for 22 years as a solicitor, specialized in health law.  He was a member of the Belgian National Advisory Board for Bio-Ethics (2000-2004)and President of the National Advisory Board for Patient Rights (2004-2006). He is a member of the ethics committee of the Ghent University Hospital.

Yechiel Michael Barilan, MD, MA | HUMANITARIAN MEDICINE AND BIOETHICS

Associate Professor, Department of Medical Education, Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel

Prof. Barilan's research subjects are Bioethics, Biolaw and Medical Humanities. His own personal interests encompass moral theory and the intersections among bioethics, social history and related normative domains, such as law and religion, especially Halakhah (Jewish religious law), and explores human rights law and international humanitarian law in the light of the contemporary ethical and meta-ethical discourse. He is the Academic Director of the Bioethics and Law Initiative at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine in Tel Aviv University and a prolific writer of academic publications in this field. 

Sivia Bar-Noy, PhD, RN | NURSING

Deparment of Nursing, School of Health Professions, Tel Aviv University, Israel

Professor Sivia Bar-Noy is a senior researcher and lecturer in the School of Health Professions in the Department of Nursing.

She earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and then worked for 7 years as a nurse in pediatric intensive care. At the same time, she completed her master's degree in human genetics with honors from Tel Aviv University. She completed her doctoral studies in human genetics at Tel Aviv University.

Believing that the contribution to man and society is very important, she has become part of the Nursing Department, which is the founding circle of academic nursing in Israel and the leader in its field.

Nils Broeckx obtained a doctoral degree at the University of Antwerp in 2016 with a thesis headed ‘Orgaantransplantatie. Een juridische analyse’ (Organ transplantation. A legal analysis). After this, he joined Dewallens & partners law firm as a lawyer. Since 2017, Nils is a professor at the University of Antwerp where he teaches ‘Medical terminology and evaluation of human damages’ (Master’s program), ‘damages and compensation’ (postgraduate program on Liability Law and Insurance – ALLIC) and ‘international health law’ (postgraduate program on Health Law and Ethics – AHLEC). Rabbi Yuval Cherlow | MEDICINE AND JEWISH LAW

Head of the Ethics Department of the Zohar Rabbi's Organization.

Born in 1957, Rabbi Cherlow studied at the Har Etzion Yeshiva. He received his rabbinical ordination from the chief Rabbi Abraham Shapira. Today he is serving as the head of the Amit Orot Shaul Yeshiva Hahesder in Kefar Batya.

Cindy Cornelis graduated in 2016 as a Masters of Law at the University of Antwerp. She is currently a third year PhD candidate at the University of Antwerp, funded by the Antwerp Health Law and Ethics Chair, under the promotion of Prof. dr. Thierry Vansweevelt. She is preparing a Ph.D. thesis on the use of genetic information in insurance. Chen Kugel, MD | FORENSIC MEDICINE

Head of the National Center of Forensic Medicine, Israel

Dr. Chen Kugel completed his medical studies at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Medical School in 1986. After completing his studies he served in the medical corps in the Israel Defence Forces, and later specialized in forensic medicine. Dr. Kugel has worked at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine since 1991. He retired from the Institute of Forensic Medicine in 2005, and established a private institute for forensic medicine services (the first of its kind in Israel). As part of his work at the Institute of Forensic Medicine and as director of a private institute, Kugel has often given expert testimony in law cases where pathological examination was required. In 2013 Kugel was appointed director of the National Institute of Forensic Medicine.

In addition to his work as a pathologist, Dr. Kugel teaches at the Faculty of Medicine of Tel Aviv University and at its law faculties and Bar-Ilan University.

Steven Kushner, MD, PhD | NEUROBIOLOGY, PSYCHIATRY AND SOCIETY

Professor of Neurobiological Psychiatry Department of Psychiatry Erasmus MC: University Medical Center Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Steven A. Kushner completed his undergraduate degree summa cum laude at the University of Pennsylvania, completing an honors thesis with Prof. dr. Hank F. Kung (1997). He studied medicine and neuroscience through the National Institutes of Health - Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of California, Los Angeles (2005). At the New York State Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University, he received clinical training as a psychiatrist including board certification. In 2009, he was appointed as the Professor of Neurobiological Psychiatry at the Erasmus MC. His lab's research program allows clinicians and clinical researchers to work side-by-side with neuroscientists, geneticists, and epidemiologists to study neuropsychiatric illnesses and neurobiological circuit mechanisms from their cellular and genetic basis to social and cognitive function.

David Lau | JEWISH MEDICAL ETHICS

The Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel

David Baruch Lau  is the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel.He has published articles in journals such as Tehumin. Similarly, he edited a book of his father's responsa titled Yichil Yisrael. He also edited and published a book in memory of his grandfather, Rabbi Yitzchak Yedidya Frankel. In 2008, he published his book Maskil LeDavid on issues of genealogy, conversion, military law, and other matters.

Dr. Thomas T. Noguchi is the former Chief Medical Examiner-Coroner for the County of Los Angeles, and served in that position from 1967 to 1982. He is known as the "coroner to the stars", since he determined the cause of death in many high-profile cases during the 1960s and 1970s. Dr. Noguchi was born in Japan and graduated from Tokyo's Nippon Medical School in 1951 before interning at The University of Tokyo School of Medicine Hospital. Shortly thereafter he immigrated to the United States. He then served a second internship at Orange County General Hospital. He was appointed a deputy coroner for Los Angeles County in 1961 and in 1967, he became Chief Medical Examiner (CME) for the county. He was later appointed Chief of Pathology at the University of Southern California and then as Administrative Pathologist for Anatomic Pathology services at the USC Medical Center.

Judit Sándor is a full professor at the Faculty of Political Science, Legal Studies and Gender Studies of the Central European University (CEU), Budapest. She had a bar exam in Hungary she conducted legal practice at Simmons & Simmons in London, had fellowships at McGill (Montreal), at Stanford (Palo Alto), and at Maison de sciences de l’homme (Paris), at NYU (New York, as a Global Research Fellow). In 1996 she received Ph.D. in law and political science. She was one of the founders of the first Patients' Right Organization (‘Szószóló’) in Hungary, she was a member of the Hungarian Science and Research Ethics Council, and currently a member at the Hungarian Human Reproduction Commission. She participated in different national and international legislative, standard setting and policy making activities in the field of biomedical law and bioethics. In 2004-2005 she served as the Chief of the Bioethics Section at the UNESCO. She published eleven books in the field of human rights and biomedical law, including “Health Care and Justice”, “Society and Genetic Information”, “Perfect Copy” and “Studies in Biopolitics”, “Biobanks and Tissue Research”, “Me Molecule”. Her articles and book chapters were published in different languages, including Hungarian, English, Croatian, Italian, French, and Portuguese. Since September 2005 she is a founding director of the Center for Ethics and Law in Biomedicine (CELAB) at the Central European University. She has completed twelve European research projects (GeneScreen, PUG, STRATA-ETAN GROUP, GeneBanC, PRIVIREAL, PRIVILEGED, Tiss.Eu, RemediE, EULOD, NANOPLAT, NERRI, EUCElLEX Project), founded by the European Commission in the field of biobanks, genetic data, stem cell research, organ transplantation and human reproduction.  

Meital Segal-Reich, PhD | ELDER LAW

Meital Segal-Reich is the national Director of the Department of Legal Aid in the Ministry of Justice in the field of representation of the elderly and in the field of representation of adults in legal processes. Elimelech (Melech) Westreich is professor of Law in the Faculty of Law of the Tel Aviv University and has been a visiting professor at the University of Chicago Law School (spring 2001, Autumn 2005, Autumn 2008). He was ordained as a rabbi by the Rabbis of Kerem Be’Yavneh Yeshiva and served as a Rabbi of a brigade in the I.D.F. He obtained the LL.B. from Bar Ilan University, the LL.M. Prof. Zisser wrote extensively on the history and the modern politics of Syria and Lebanon and the Arab-Israeli conflict. Among his books:  Assad’s Syria at a Crossroads (Tel Aviv, 1999); Asad’s Legacy – Syria in Transition (New York, 2000); Lebanon: the Challenge of Independence (London, 2000); Faces of Syria (Tel Aviv, 2003) Commanding Syria, Bashsar al-Asad’s First years in Power (London, 2006); The Bleeding Cedar (Tel Aviv, 2009), Syria :Protest, Revolution, Civil War (Tel Aviv, 2014).

 

Prof. Zisser received his PhD from Tel Aviv University. He was a visiting professor in Cornell University and a visiting research fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

Shlomit Zuckerman, BSc., LL.B, MA, PhD. | BIOETHICS AND HEALTH LAW

Shlomit Zuckerman received a BSc. (cum lade) in Biology (1993) and a LL.B (1996) from Hebrew University. She holds a MA in Bioethics (2003) and a PhD in Empirical Bioethics (2009) from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S. Her Research interests include the crossroads of health, law, ethics and policy. She co-authored chapters on medical neutrality in Military Medical ethics for the 21st century and Humanitarian Action and Ethics. She is currently working as a risk manager for Israeli hospitals and maternal and child health clinics, providing ongoing legal and ethical counselling, medicolegal lecturing, as well as designing and conducting research on effective patient safety culture and risk management training, writing on clinical care risk management and ethics issues, and teaching ethics at the Hebrew University School of Public health.
