    Advanced directives

    in Congress Themes

A case report in New England Journal of Medicine (published here:http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc1713344?query=TOC) describes a patient arriving at the emergency department with a tattoo on his chest stating "Do Not Resuscitate". This presented the team with a conflict regarding the way they should relate to this tattoo and what would be the right thing to do. While they engaged the ethics consultant first, they also managed to find the formal advanced directives of that patient so things became simpler and clearer for them. This case raises ethical and legal questions.

Would it be legal to respect that tattoo with no other available information ? some of these questions and similar ones will be addressed during the World Congress on Medical Law and Ethics in Tel Aviv. Join the deliberation! (and submit your own abstracts here: https://www.wcml2018.com/abstracts)
